I am receiving MQTT messages from a device that is not powered on

The deb-src line was already commented out.

Ok...

I hope I understood what you said and it is 14% of the way through a (somewhat) large update.

So it is going to be busy for some time.

Well, the update/grade is done.

Looking at the lists, mosquitto was not updated.

As even buster is not compatible with the fix: I'll eave well enough alone.

Thanks and sorry.

In that case you can install from the mosquitto repository.

OK, thanks.

It is 22:39 local here.

I may give it a go tomorrow.
What will it give me?
human readable timestamps?

(Just asking)
Will I need t restart mosquitto?

Compared to this, how much trouble is it to get version 5 - or is that not compatible with buster?
(Or what ever the latest version is)

The latest version of mosquitto, 2.0.13

Yes

Mosquitto 2.x does do MQTT 5.

It will restart itself after installing the latest version. As you will be upgrading to 2.x you may have to add the 2.0 stuff to the conf file to allow access from other systems
