Since this is such a broad topic "Modern way to write nodes" - I would throw in my [NodeDev](https://flows.nodered.org/node/@gregoriusrippenstein/node-red-contrib-nodedev) package that makes developing Node-RED nodes _in_ Node-RED as _flows_ possible.

Any other simplified approaches to developing Node-RED nodes?
