Earlier this year, @dceejay and I discussed [essentially this question](https://discourse.nodered.org/t/possible-new-contributed-message-gate-node/7382) in relation to a node I had developed. It uses basically the same mechanism to pass messages without wires connecting source and destination nodes. In that case, it didn't seem that the added capability outweighed the downside, so I never published to npm.
