Probably will work. I don't even begin to understand Linux audio though! ALSA seemed to be the minimum I needed on my Debian laptop server to get sound from the laptop speakers which is all I needed.
There are also at least 3 or 4 other options for TTS, Pico seemed to be simple but give a 1/2 way decent voice without needing to send stuff to the Internet.
