Apologies if I am missing an obvious solution!

If I have, say, a switch, LED or gauge on a dashboard page and I want them to also appear on another page is there a way to create a symbolic duplicate and just place it, or is it necessary to create a new, 'real' version and wire it up in the same way as the original - for example, a second LED receiving the same input as the first?

Thanks

Correct. You have to make a copy. 1:1 relationship between nodes and widgets.
