Ah - good point. No license fees or royalties to pay 😉
There aren't many other open source cores available, and most of them are pretty old and less powerful. I've also worked with SPARC-V8 based designs (quite widely used in space at one time) and that is a very weird architecture! Clever at the time but a pain to write the low-level code for...
