I am not surprised that works when running directly on the Pi, in a terminal window, and it was that symptom that first led me to think that it is the display spec that is the problem. When you run it as a systemd script it is not attached to a window. What I don't understand is how it works in a remote ssh shell, where the window is on the remote machine.
When you say that you just use putty on your windows machine, do you mean that you just tell putty to connect to the IP address of the pi?
