Button navigation "left" / "right" similarly to swipe left / right?

hi there,
I need a tip on how to use buttons (e.g. in the toolbar) to navigate "left" or "right", similarly to what would happen on a touchscreen when swiping left and right.
Is there a readily built function (e.g with the ui_control node) or other code I can use?
My homebrewed version is falling down on a number of fronts, including temporarily hidden tabs ...
I had created the "<" and ">" buttons on both sides of the "home" button:

Any points would be highly appreciated!
