What sort of load was it?

It's a small 240 > 12v transformer for a LED strip.

What? 3A 240v for an LED strip? That's 700Watts.

@colin, it was drawing about 24 Watts, I measured it. I think it was 3 amps max on the output.

OK, that has to be a faulty relay then. There is no way a load of 0.1A or thereabouts would harm it.

I used this optocoupler module to get a signal (feedback) from a 220V device:

1-Bit-AC-220V-Optocoupler

Of course, there is CE and then "CE" As CE is mainly self-certified, it doesn't always mean as much as you may think. But of course, mains will kill though most commonly, fire is a bigger risk. I'm not an electrician but I do know a fair bit about the physics of it which is why I am always very cautious. There is an increasing number of CE marked Chinese plugs that don't get any scrutiny because they are sealed. The good thing about SONOFF's is that they aren't sealed and so lots of people do take them apart and examine/test them in details. Faults become obvious pretty quick - such as the batches of relays that were faulty and causing fires.
