Custom User Authentication not working with Embedded Node-RED

Has anybody tried and had success using Custom User Authentication with Node-RED embedded in a custom express app?

I am getting an unauthorised failure when Node-RED tries to load resource with http://localhost:8080/flows/settings?_=1582047906209

It works fine when I use my auth functions if Node-RED is not embedded
