The issue is that there are many ways so your question didn't give us enough information to give you a more sensible answer. Plenty of people are using NR to do this.
My favourite way is to connect NR to the Telegram messaging service. NR acts as a "bot" which uses all of the security of Telegram which is generally a lot easier than trying to keep Node-RED itself secure as a web app exposed to the Internet.
