I had to take off the top stone otherwise it would slide off 
I see, you could have cleaned it up with a hammer and bolster, mixed up a little sand and cement and reattached. That's why I found @Buckskin comment about DIY funny.
Now if it was soldered on we would not be having this discussion.
[edit] Tip, there are some good polyurethane expanding glues and expanding foam that work well for a quick fairly long lasting fix.
