Setting up Multiple Node-Red instances on a college Network

I want to teach my 6th formers how to use Node-Red as part of their course.
I cannot find an easy way to set up Node_Red on a sever so that multiple students can log in and write some IOT controlling code.
Yes I have seen the article on multiple instances using different ports, however I can' even get to that point yet as I can't load even on instance onto the server.
On standalone Windows PC or Pi's it's a doddle, but on a college network I am stuck.
Anybody got any ideas?
Somebody must have done it over the years.

There's a lot of missing detail here. What OS is your server running? What have you tried to do so far?

Also, is the college using a proxy / does the server have internet access / do you have to enter a username/password to access the internet from that server?

Do you have node-red installed?
are you having trouble starting node-red? If so, what does the console show you?

Or are you having trouble accessing the http editor of node-red?

NOTE: running multiple instances is a breeze once you have one running ...

Hi there,

It took me a few days to be in college again.

Its all windows server based,

WPA2 enterprise, PEAP, Chapv2 authentication for the wireless

Wireless is aruba.

No proxy

All client machines are windows 10 builds but obviously locked down with group policies so the students can't fiddle.

My plan was to have Node-Red loaded on each windows client machine, then students could have their own version of Node-Red to work on. Live data being provided by various WiFi sensors, temp Humidity etc.... We will eventually have external sensor outside powered / connected to a LoRa Hub which we have just had installed.

I don't mind how we get multiple builds of Node_red onto the system but at present I can get NODE.JS loaded on each client machine but I it gets stuck at loading Node-Red via NPM from the CMD line.

Are you certain? What do you get if you run netsh winhttp show proxy in a cmd line terminal?

Can you reach the internet from a command line? What heppens if you ping google.com from a cmd terminal? the reason I ask is npm is a command line tool that downloads packages from the internet.

Other thoughts...

• Nodejs (by default) sets up the NPM Global directory per user. Are you expecting the users to perform the node-red install? On our servers, we tend to set npm global and cache to c:\ProgramData\npm-global and c:\ProgramData\npm-cache (search internet for how to do this)

• Why did you switch from setting up multiple instances on a server to setting up per client machine?

Other thoughts...

Nodejs (by default) sets up the NPM Global directory per user. Are you expecting the users to perform the node-red install? On our servers, we tend to set npm global and cache to c:\ProgramData\npm-global and c:\ProgramData\npm-cache (search internet for how to do this)

I do not have access to the servers directly.  They are heavily locked down. It was thought possibly mistakenly that it would be easier to load node-red on the client machines. My lack of knowledge I'm afraid

Why did you switch from setting up multiple instances on a server to setting up per client machine?

Would it be easier for me to set up a standalone micro server (for instance a Pi or laptop) and run multiple instances on that.   I will have an IOT server running on a Pi 4 using Docker containers.
But I could easily set up another.

To get past that without error, you need windows build tools installed. You can do that from an elevated command prompt...

npm install --global --production --add-python-to-path windows-build-tools

HOWEVER* it is not absolutely necessary to fix this unless you are wanting to use serial ports or something that needs compilation because as you can see from this line...
