You are right, it is not random, but as far as the s/w that draws the chart is concerned, if it is not given it in the format it expects then it might as well be random. Remember we are not talking about Artificial Intelligence here, which could be capable of looking at the data and trying to work out what it is suppose to do with it. The chart is dumb s/w that expects the data in a particular format and converts the numbers to a line on a chart.
