Google Nest Thermostat - support in Node-RED

Many moons ago I was able to control my Nest thermostat with Node-RED.

Then Nest was bought out by Google, then it stopped working, then they released "works with Nest" or somesuch thing which ironically made my home STOP working with Nest... now I understand it's part of Google Home, although I have not otherwise bought into that Ecosystem so I'm not sure what's what.

Can any Nest owners tell me:

  • will Nest work with Node-RED right now?
  • if so, what is the most straightforward / trouble-free way of getting a very simple integration (no bells and whistles needed) - just the ability to
  1. be able to set the temperature
  2. read back the actual temp
  3. read back the set-temp
