I have a shed. In that shed is the router with my network. I'd like to plug some smart device into the router that has an IP address that Node Red can send on/off commands to. That smart device would then wirelessly turn on or off a 120V plug in the same shed.
Can anyone recommend a device / smart outlet that would fit the bill?
Are you looking for wired or wireless? Wireless gives you more options I think.
Wi-Fi and Zigbee wireless solutions are the most common. But in this specific case, Bluetooth might even be ok.
Of course, you will need to make sure that you actually have a method of turning the plug back on again. No good if your Node-RED and other servers are running off the same powerpoint.
A Tasmota smart socket is a good suggestion. If you are in the US I suggest Athom since they can be bought with Tasmota firmware, which works very well with Node-red & MQTT
(There is a v3 too, don't know what the difference is)
A Tasmota device connects to your wifi.
You can give it an MQTT topic eg "tasmota/shed" and then you can control it by publishing "ON" or "OFF" to that topic.
Tasmota devices send regular status messages too, including relay state and sometimes power consumption data.
