if you don't know the system area of the plc, a very simple method is to create a polling, set a bit (merker) with the plc and reset it with NodeRed, or in the plc you create an incremental counter and with NodeRed you control it.

Only way to do that its reading a DB, that Db should have status of the plc or the clock flag.
Ping to the IP doesnt work only if the plc in off(no power)
