Rich Text Editor mode - yuck ☹️

The new default for the forum edit box is a bit naff unfortunately. I've tried to get on with it but, especially for code blocks, it doesn't work that well.

For one thing, the dropdown for language is missing html. :frowning:
Also, you seem to have to use the mouse to click on the dropdown which takes you away from the keyboard. Then you have to click back on the right line and, in dark mode at least, there is no colour differentiator between the text background and the code box background so it is a) not obvious you are IN code mode and b) hard to know where it begins and ends.

That the WYSIWYG mode is no wider than the non-WYSIWYG input also makes it rather pointless it seems to me.

I really wanted to like it but sadly it still needs some work to become truly useable.

I think it would be much better if the default setting for the editor was Markdown - M↓ as it’s what we are all familiar with, and to get a preview, switch to Auto - A

@moderators
I couldn't agree more!
Please set all new features OFF by default:

  • no auto correction of the messages
(It just deleted my reply line! If someone is reading this via email, will not understand what line I answered to!)
  • not auto formatting of Markdown

Took me 40 minutes of my time figure out what's going on here.

No styling is still much much better, than the mess it makes.
(Always the opposite of what I want.)
Also for newcomers.

This forum is for professionals, not for talking about fingernails.

It's nothing that moderators can change, although according to AI, Admin members can change the option - if they wished.

The new rich text editor is enabled by default, but administrators can set the default composition mode to Markdown via the admin site settings or use CSS to hide the toggle switch if they want to enforce the Markdown mode. Users who prefer Markdown can still switch to it using the toggle in the composer's toolbar.

I do not know who are the forum admins.

I believe that there are 2, dceejay and Nick O'Leary (no need to tag them - they'll read this anyway :face_with_raised_eyebrow:)

OK, we'll wait and hope they'll replay.

There are 16 moderators - if you click the @... you put in, you should be able to see them I think.

There are 3 admin's of the forum but only 2 are real people as Paul has said. Nick and Dave. They are the only ones who can make changes to the forum as far as I know.

I’m hopeful as a new feature that Discourse will iterate quickly and improve things based on feedback. That feedback only gets to them via their own forum however.

In theory, a rich text editor makes the forum more accessible. But given this feedback, I’ll toggle the default (if I can find it…) back to the MD editor.
